The Junior League of Fresno has been working to make California’s Central Valley a better place to live since 1959, and Manco Abbott has been raising the standards where people live, work and play since 1972.

On Saturday March 4th, Manco team members Katrina Corona, Amanda Chavez and Kelly Gibson teamed up with the Junior League in the inaugural Independent City Program, held at Kirk Elementary School in Fresno.

The program focused on developing life skills for young adults who will soon be aging out of the foster care system.  Participants were provided with simulations of real life adulthood experiences including opening a bank account, applying for housing, interviewing for jobs, selecting transportation and more.

The Manco team showed participants how to fill out rental applications, helped them understand rental criteria, and answered questions on what is necessary to qualify for rental housing.

In addition to providing coaching on life skills relating to finding and qualifying for housing, the Manco team acted as positive role models for the participants.  Without such guidance, these teens are more likely than their peers to end up in jail, homeless or pregnant.  They’re also less likely to have a job or go to college.
